Free Things to Do in San Sebastián
San Sebastián has an unusually large free layer for its size, and most visitors never see it, because it is aimed at the people who live here rather than at the people on the beach. The public cultural agenda
The Basque Government publishes the region's cultural agenda openly, and San Sebastián's share of it is dense: concerts, theatre, cinema, exhibitions, dantza, bertsolaritza, talks, workshops and neighbourhood events, current every day rather than gathered into a weekly listing. Donostia Kultura, the city's own cultural body, is the biggest single publisher in it, and a large part of what it programmes costs nothing.

A real share of the summer programme happens where there is no door to pay at: the bandstand on the Boulevard, the Plaza de la Constitución in the Old Town, Plaza Easo, the Plaza Tomás Alba out at Sagües, and the amphitheatre up at Miramón. In summer the city even puts a library on Monte Urgull.

Semana Grande: the free week of the year
Aste Nagusia in August is the biggest free block in the calendar — 8 to 15 August in 2026. The International Fireworks Contest over La Concha runs across the week, watched from the shore by most of the city, and the concerts at Sagües are free too, alongside a street programme of dantza, bertsolaritza, competitions and events for children.
